Muziris Project tries to retain existing market activities and systems. Close to the Jewish street and synagogue, the market is situated on the banks of the backwaters. One can still picture fresh produce unloaded off on 'Vanchis', traditional Kerala boats that are used to this day, to ply the backwaters. It retains the livelihood of the people who benefit from the market with conserving the historic buildings within the market. The waterfront here is developed with boat jetties so as to facilitate seating along the with a view of the river. Some of the traditional buildings still stand here amidst newer, more modern constructions.
